  • A Rather Strange Look at a Ranting Man

The Rock Ed Wood of the 21st Century (2010) ** (out of 4) This documentary, clocking in just under a hour, discusses Rocky Nelson, a current filmmaker who many have compared to Ed Wood because his films feature a really low-budget and they're done without too much talent. I must say that I'm a little confused as to what this documentary was trying to do. You honestly don't learn too much about Nelson here and there aren't too many clips from his movies shown. You honestly don't learn too many things about his films or anything else for that matter. So, what does the documentary do? Well, the film basically has Nelson talking and talking and talking. In fact, he does nothing but rant about one subject or another throughout the running time. He throws a fit about critics who bash his films but then he bashes "fake" filmmakers who put their movies on Facebook. He talks about various details of his personal life but they're mostly rants. He also talks about God throughout the piece but it just comes off as mindless rambling. I understand documentaries can be fake and a lot of times people "act" in front of the camera. I don't know Nelson so I can't say what type of person he is but this documentary makes him seem like a raving maniac. It's really too bad that we didn't learn more about him or at least learn more about why he acts the way he does. As I said, for a documentary we simply don't learn enough to make this film more interesting. The film is basically just a rant session. A mildly entertaining rant session but not a very good one.
