The Real Thing (2002) Reviews
Melbourne does quirky without being sickening
What a nice change to see a quirky Aussie rom-com that wears its heart on its sleeve. With lots of energy and some of the most obscure film references you can imagine, The Real Thing pays homage to big budget Hollywood while keeping its feet planted firmly on Australian soil. Ross Buchanan is a stutterer with the ability to impersonate anyone and Katie Fischer is his beautiful (blind) love interest. From this rather odd premise, the film leaps forward at a mile a minute, making fun of everything from the cult of celebrity to fast food outlets, all while tipping its hat at Hollyweird (one character even uses the fake name of George Kaplan - think North By Northwest and Hudson Hawk for that one!). The cast is great, the film is supersonic fast and the finale (rom-com resolution played out with jumbo jets as a backdrop to the action) is a sight to behold. Yes, it is a low budget rom-com from downunder and it is one of those great little films that puts a smile on your face for a few hours, but it makes you wonder what they would have done if they had a big budget.
