This HBO TV special celebrates the 25th Anniversary of The Rock and Roll Of Fame". It originally aired on Saturday Nov. 28, 09 from 8:00 PM - 12:10 AM EST. Appropriate for a Thanksgiving weekend. Jerry Lee Lewis opens with "Great Balls Of Fire". Crosby Stills and Nash sing "Woodstock" and join Bonnie Rait for "Love Has No Pride ", Jackson Brown for " The Pretender" and James Taylor for "Love The One Your With". Stevie Wonder performs "For Once In My Life" and " Higher Ground" and joins Sting for " Roxanne" and "Superstition". Smokey Robinson does his classic "Tracks Of My Tears". B. B.King sings "The Thrill Is Gone". Aretha Franklin performs " Baby I Love You" ,"Don't Play That Song" and joins Annie Lennox to sing "Chain Of Fools". Ray Davies and Metallica jam on "All Day And All Night" . Paul Simon sings "You Can Call Me Al", and pays tribute to George Harrison, as he joins Graham Nash and Steven Stills for "Here Comes The Sun". Hall of Fame Is Right
The 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concert (2009) **** (out of 4) Fans of rock and roll are certainly going to be in for a treat as this concert, recorded over two days in New York City, has enough legends for five shows. You know you're in for a treat when Jerry Lee Lewis starts off rocking a version of "Great Balls of Fire" and the show closes with Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel doing "Born to Run." In between we get countless acts doing their own songs as well as covers. Artists include Metallica with Ozzy Osbourne, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Mick Jagger, Aretha Franklin, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, Simon and Garfunkel, U2, Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Jackson Brown, Smokey Robinson, Sting and various others. If you're a fan of rock then I don't see how you could be disappointed here. Yes, there are a few people (Bob Dylan) that should have been included but even those people are still mentioned throughout the show. The greatest thing going here is getting to see the various acts performing together and this here is where all the fun comes from. Seeing John Fogerty and Springsteen take on "Oh, Pretty Woman" was a blast. At over 5-hours with commercials, this here is certainly an epic rock show.
One of the best concerts in human history
Perhaps the best concert I've had the pleasure to watch in my entire life. You can't see that often so many big names in music gathered in one place. The video and audio quality of the blu-ray is really amazing so get it as it's worth every penny ! After hearing so much cheap commercial music all around everyday, you will be delighted to hear these guys singing tens of years after the original releases with almost unchanged tonal qualities and of course no computer aids for the voices ! I've most enjoyed Simon & Garfunkel, U2 & Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen & Tom Morello. I would have only also invited Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits to join this concert and it would have been perfect !
The Best Rock Concert Ever.
Nobody has reviewed this?!? Whoa.... Let me just say that this is 4 hours of insanely good Rock & Roll music. Crosby, Stills & Nash - Almost Cut My Hair; Stevie Wonder - Higher Ground/Roxanne with Sting; Simon & Garfunkel - The Sounds of Silence; Metallica - Enter Sandman; U2 - Gimme Shelter with Mick Jagger, Fergie and will.i.am; Jeff Beck - Let Me Love You Baby with Buddy Guy; Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - The Ghost of Tom Joad with Tom Morello; and sooooooooo much more. And if you don't know any of those names but Rock & Roll has piqued your curiosity then this is step one for you. Enjoy. I sure did, and more than once.
A Must for Music Fans
The 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concert (2009) **** (out of 4) This concert was to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and featured a terrific music line up. This concert was originally recorded at Madison Square Garden on October 29th and 30th, 2009. The full version has been released but there's also an edited one that clocks in at 139-minutes and of course is missing a lot of footage. Metallica, Simon and Garfunkel, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, U2, Jeff Beck, Sting, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Smokey Robinson and Mick Jagger are just some of the faces who show up on stage and we're treated to some great musical numbers as well as some fun duets including Springsteen and Billy Joel rocking out to New York State of Mind and Born to Run. If you're a fan of ROck and Roll music then this here will certainly be a must see. There's no question that one should go for the complete shows if they're able to find it but even the edited version makes for great television. There are some really terrific numbers performed including Simon and Garfunkel teaming up for what will probably be the last time. U2 does a rocking version of Gimme Shelter with Jagger and Metallica obviously rips things up. Fans of rock music should certainly watch this and enjoy it for the sheer number of great artists that were lined up to take part. Of course, you should also go to the actual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland as it's quite remarkable.
A mixed bag, but the great moments are truly great
Roughly in order of the performances: Jerry Lee Lewis: is very old. Crosby, Stills & Nash: I don't think I've ever seen them play a bad set. Stevie Wonder: surprisingly uneven, and he actually seems to be playing through some kind of a health issue during "The Way You Make Me Feel." But Roxanne (with Sting of course) is brilliant. Paul Simon / Simon & Garfunkel: the reunited duo are the standout here, together they can still raise the hairs on your neck. Little Anthony & the Imperials: one song, but what a song! Metallica: you basically need to already be a metal fan, because as their numbers with Ray Davies and Lou Reed demonstrate, Metallica really can't do anything else. If you *are* a metal fan, though, Ozzy Osbourne's guest turn is a thing of beauty. U2: Surprisingly, they don't mesh very will with Bruce Springsteen as a guest artist. But Gimme Shelter with Mick Jagger and the Black-Eyed Peas is surprisingly good and their delivery of their own songs is lovely, if you're a U2 fan. Jeff Beck: excellent from end to end -- with the exception of a surprisingly awful rendition of Foxy Lady by guest Billy Gibbons -- and his bassist, who looks about twelve, is standout too. (In fact I had to look her up: her name is Tal Wilkenfield. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band: ... and that, ladies and gentlemen, is why they call him the Boss. Of course they ended with Springsteen, nobody could follow this set. Especially with the spectacular guest turns from Tom Morello, Sam Moore, John Fogerty and Darlene Love... and of course, Billy Joel.
