Sheep Skin (2013) Reviews

  • We're the good guy here. Remember that.

Because of circumstantial evidence Todd (Laurence Mullaney) is suspected of being a werewolf while his wife (Jamie Lyn Bagley) thinks he is just sleeping around. Four members of a punk band kidnap and cuff Todd in a warehouse where they question him and wait for him to change into a werewolf while their doubts increase. Also is a bad night for Mrs. Todd to figure out that GPS phone tracker thing. We've done the warehouse films before, "Reservoir Dogs" being my favorite. Zach Gillette takes the role of a "Michael Madsen" type, who simply likes to beat people up. The low budget film "Four" was also a warehouse film, I thought was done well too on a budget. The whole film involves interaction until the end when we discover the truth. The interactions and characters proved to be entertaining enough for the duration of the production. Personally I was hoping for a twist with the wife actually being a werewolf who had followed her husband around. Not too late for an alternative ending. Guide: F-word. No sex. Male butt nudity (Laurence Mullaney) Note to self: Matthew 7:15 should not be taken literally.

  • tense - but not very "horror"

I thought a couple of things made this film view-worthy. I like the concept a lot, and the pace/progression worked very well. However, I think more suspense could have been added if the punk band members were definitively more zealous - more devoted to their idea about the businessman being a werewolf. As it was, they lacked fervor and weren't very convincing, and thus, I found the atmosphere less frightening and the characters just seemed silly. (Also, this may just be me: but the businessman's acting is...not great. His voice was so soft I could barely hear 70% of what he said, and overall he gave kind of a lackluster performance.) This movie ultimately comes together as average, in my opinion. No stand out acting, no particularly special twists, no interesting folklore, but also not terrible.

  • That was actually all right

Within the first 2 minutes I knew this was gonna be amateur. One of the main characters has pictures of his family members facing away from him. The pictures are facing toward visitors. I've worked in many office settings and have never actually seen someone face their family pictures away from them. No one does that. For the director to make such an amateur mistake, it means I should lower my expectations. Lowering my expectations helped like this movie. There were many flaws: the acting (like another reviewer noted, the bald guy talked way too low and was pretty unconvincing). The unsteady swaying cam was also annoying (it wasn't shaking, just swaying all the time). But it was only made for $25,000 and it had around two set locations and 7 cast members. So I have to give it some leeway. The pacing was good. However, they really could have tried harder to increase the tension, suspense, and mystery. Personally, I give this guys credit because they were interested in making a good movie and did good with what they had. Way too many indie filmmakers seem like they don't care that there's an audience watching the movie. These guys recognized their limitations. As a result, they made a movie that's worth watching for a fan of werewolf horror films. Nothing groundbreaking. But it wasn't a cliché-filled predictable mess like so many other horror movies. It had some gore but no hot chicks get naked, unfortunately. Recommendation: give this one a shot if you have nothing better to do for 75 minutes. It's one of those "Okay. That was all right", shrug your shoulders type horror movies. I'd like to see more from this director as it looks like he could improve with time and better resources.
