  • Well told story and beautiful looking movie that sucks you in from the beginning

(No spoilers) I expected full blown Kung-Fu (me not doing my homework) but was instead completely surprised. A woman who gets severely beaten daily by her pro- Thai-boxer-husband, has childhood issues, a daughter who hates her and unsupportive friends, decides to fight back and in a moment of desperation she challenge him, in public, to a fight in the ring. I was expecting this to be some long montage of her training and getting magical Kung-Fu powers, but it was nothing like that, this is not a fighting movie per se. The story is told from her perspective the whole way, and she is not superwoman, she gets beaten, she is scared, and altogether does not seem like she could hurt a mouse. She does go into the ring with him and.... no I'm not telling. If you feel like seeing a movie about an underdog who steps up to oppression, without silly superpowers and scared s**tless the whole way, a movie that keeps an altogether human perspective throughout the story, then watch "Punch Lady". It has some very funny moments that made me laugh out loud, and some pretty grim moments that where hard to watch, and it is well told.

  • I loved this movie

I love movies where the abused person takes action instead of having someone else do it for them(like the movie "enough")but the whole boxing thing made it original. The actor who played the husband did a really good job cuz I hated his character and he played a psychotic b**** really well. The actress that played the abused wife did well too. SPOILER~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What I liked most about the movie was the boxing scene between the wife and husband IMO. I thought it was realistic. She didn't automatically beat him up. She was still very scared of him and his abuse. It took a little while before she got angry, thinking of all the abuse and her child. She probably beat the husband(who's a pro boxer) and won because the husband was too caught off guard that his wife was strong and was hitting him. He probably didn't have time to absorb that fact and couldn't find the strength to bat her back while she was hitting him

  • Mostly disappointing

To begin with, the premise of "Punch Lady" stretches credibility to the limit: a person (forget the gender here) with absolutely no fighting training or experience publicly challenges a professional fighter, and champion (!), who just killed his latest opponent inside the ring, to a fight in the ring three months later, and the fight is allowed to go on? Officially? With a ref, huge crowds and everything? With the risk of the amateur's permanent injury or even death ignored? Now add the fact that the challenger is a woman who also happens to be the fighter's frequently abused wife, and you get the basic idea of "Punch Lady". But it seems that the filmmakers want to have their cake and eat it too: unpleasant dramatic scenes mix uncomfortably with broad attempts at comedy, while the film spends way too little time on the actual training of the heroine that would make the situation somewhat more believable. Even the climactic ring fight is not very well shot - too many cut-aways and weird angles. What holds the movie together is the female lead, who is very charming, can do drama, AND can throw a pretty damn good kick when she's allowed to, which is not nearly often enough. ** out of 4.

  • Surprisingly great movie!

By western standards this film may seem to strain credibility quite a bit, but if the viewer is willing to cast aside cultural differences and make an effort to view it from an eastern perspective, it is really an exceptional movie. To the western viewer, even the best Asian films can often seem overly demonstrative, and often require more suspension of disbelief than Americans are used to giving movies. But even if you don't have an experiential or academic understanding of eastern cultures, if you just make a little effort to open yourself to a broader artistic approach and acknowledge that moments that may initially seem awkward are actually quite poignant when considered from an Asian cultural perspective, it truly is a moving, human, and even funny cinematic experience. I loved it! Ji-Won To is fantastic as the "Punch Lady!" She is sympathetic, warm, charming, funny, and genuinely likable, and demonstrates great range as an actress here.

  • Must See South Korean Movie

I did not know what to expect from this movie. One trailer I had seen concentrated on the wife abuse whereas a second trailer I saw tried to concentrate on the comedy. It's not a funny move though. They try to add comedy to it but it falls fairly flat. But It's a movie about spousal abuse, you don't even realize that there were funny bits put in. Great Movie, the main actress and the daughter are incredible in the movie. There are completely unrealistic events in the movie. But without them, no movie. And I enjoyed this movie completely.
