Lamplight (2011) Reviews
Depressing, but still gripping and effective
Writer Perry Arnold (a fine and credible performance by Johnny Alonso) struggles with finishing a book on time to meet a deadline. Haunted by painful memories of his abusive mother (a memorably monstrous Jeanie M. Clark) and lonely childhood, Perry further suffers from a broken heart due to the recent loss of his fed-up girlfriend Sara (a sturdy portrayal by Megan Therese Rippey). Director Jason Koch evokes a strong feeling of angst and despair, grounds the absorbing premise in a believable everyday reality, and vividly captures the troubled protagonist's tortured and unstable mindset. Moreover, this film warrants extra praise for being one of the few rare instances in which one actually sees a writer writing on screen. David W. Morley's striking cinematography provides a stunning stylized look. The shuddery synthesizer score does the skin-crawling trick. In addition, the story makes a valid and potent point about the devastating long term damage wrought by childhood abuse. A downbeat, yet poignant and compelling short.
