Looking for Tony Vilar
An Italian immigrant to Argentina, Antonio Ragusa, became a singing sensation as Tony Vilar. He was an idol in the early 1960s. Perhaps his biggest hit was "Love Me With All Your Heart", something that after many years after it was released, it inspires Peppe Voltarelli, an aspiring Italian singer to travel to Buenos Aires in search for the man whose singing inspired him. To his surprise, Peppe finds out Tony is not to be found in Argentina. Peppe is sent from one place to another in a wild goose chase, and only when he goes to visit Mabel Lando, who used to be Tony's lover, he gets to find out the truth about the singer. Tony, evidently, decided to abandon his position as the idol he was when a fan yanked the wig he always wore. It was a secret he never revealed to anyone. The embarrassment he felt made him leave Argentina at the height of his popularity. The scandal that made him give up his dream was never highly publicized in the country. With the help of a friend he meets in Buenos Aires, Peppe goes to New York, because that is where Tony Vilar has been living all the time after he left the country. In New York, there is another wild goose chase throughout, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Connecticut and New Jersey where he makes the acquaintance of the "Sopranos" crowd. Finally, Peppe gets to meet the idol he was looking for in a used car lot where Tony Vilar has been selling vehicles after he decided to quit the profession he loved. The film, directed by Giuseppe Gagliardi, which was co-written by him and the star of the film, Peppe Voltarelli, is part a comedy, mixed with a sort of 'road movie'. The film is fun to watch because it is not pretentious. The creators try to give the audience a portrait of the man that could have been somebody, but because of a bad break, leaves it all to go on a different direction. Mr. Voltarelli is the star of the film, and in the end, the legend, himself, can be seen at last.
