Karobaar: The Business of Love (2000) Reviews

  • Everything Old is New Again

When this was released, it was already dated, with scenes that had been shot 8 years earlier. However, for viewers now, we are watching old films anyway. Consider (as many reviewers have said, that it would have been a hit if released earlier. What does it matter now that it was released in 2000 instead of 1993 or 4? A stronger story than I expected. If the IMDb synopsis of Indecent Proposal is correct, this is much more than a remake of that movie, because the moral twist of an Indian version pervades the film in ways that make it far more interesting. And for folks who can't believe that a woman like the heroine could fall for a dumpy looking Rishi Kapoor, I submit that women do not always go for money or good looks. From time to time we are attracted by character and personality in ways that neither money nor hot looks can conquer. Worth looking at.

  • You can't buy love.....

Karobaar is essentially about a couple which in this case is Juhi Chawla and Rishi Kapoor. The two of them struggle on with their lives with the little money that they have. All of that changes when Anil Kapoor, a very rich and wealthy man steps in. He gets between the two of them and tries to win over Juhi no matter how much money it takes. The basic message of this film is "You can't buy love." Love doesn't have a price, it is based on the matters of relationships and all that stuff. The movie was fairly good, though I did expect it to be a little better. All characters played their roles well and the music was pretty nice too. It's not really the kind of film you'd want to watch multiple times, but it did entertain me for about three hours! I couldn't ask for more than that! Overall, Karobaar deserves a 5/10!

  • Stale project

    silvan-desouza2013-07-15

When the promos of Karobaar hit the small screen, one was shocked due to the stale look of the film, The film was started in 1992 and released in 2000. The film released after the success of Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai(2000) which did raise some expectations from Rakesh Roshan. The film is a remake of AN INDECENT PROPOSAL which was itself ahead of it's times when the film started, Another film SAUDA which released in 1995 had a similar topic and failed. Karobaar started when Rishi's career as a romantic hero was fading due to his weight and age, Anil Kapoor was a star while Juhi Chawla too was a young beauty who was getting hits after hits, but when the film released Rishi had stopped signing lead roles, Anil Kapoor was still in demand but not as much as earlier, while Juhi was no longer that hot property The film is dealt maturely by Rakesh Roshan and the characters are handled properly. The initial portions are not too captivating due to the stale look, the romance between Juhi and Rishi looks outdated(It's too odd to see such a puffy Rishi to be shown as a college pass out) but the twist is well handled, Anil's character which has shades of grey is interesting, the twist and turns towards the second half are well dealt, but the ending looks like a compromise. All of a sudden the film ends on such a clichéd note. One thing works in the advantage, the scenes shown in the flashback are the 1992 portions while the recent portions are shot recently which works well. Direction by Rakesh Roshan is good in parts but the stale look spoils the film Music by Rajesh Roshan sounds melidious but gives it a stale feel. Anil Kapoor looks straight out of his Laadla days and does a good job in a role that has grey shades. Rishi Kapoor is a complete miscast, though he does a good job in dramatic portions yet he looks out of place as the college student. Juhi Chawla reminds us of her DARR days and does well in emotional scenes Amongst rest Tinnu Anand is typecast rest are as usual
