Inside Edge (1992) Reviews

  • Forgotten Madsen vehicle with a late night movie feel

    Erich81922012-10-14

Totally forgotten late night trashy R-rated action flick starring Michael Madsen, which was perhaps his very first leading role ever (!), after he was riding high in the industry with critically praised supporting roles in The Doors, Thelma & Louise, and Reservoir Dogs. First off, this cookie-cutter cop thriller looks so dated, from the endless parade of acid washed jeans to the Rayban sunglasses to the Luke Perry inspired haircuts I can almost remember what 1992 smelled like when I throw this sun bleached VHS in the machine...and yes VHS dummy, you think this has ever been released on any other format? Madsen sleepwalks through the role as an honest cop who plays by his own rules (original), but falls for the bad girl while being undercover (original). Drugs and sex and double crosses ensue, standard b-movie action fare. Roles worth noting are pizza face Richard Lynch as the baddie, and Branscombe Richmond as a heavy. Personal highlight of the movie for me is the on-location Baja and SD shots as I grew up there, beautiful pacific cliffs. As an action movie, this is small budget predictable garbage, but as an early and super rare piece of the Michael Madsen opus, it is worth hunting down a $1.99 VHS from amazon.

  • Don't even think about watching this ..............

Don't even think about watching this because of Richard Lynch, Michael Madsen, or Branscombe Richmomd. They really don't do anything except talk, talk, and more talk. Madsen's cop character is about as unlikable as he could be. Rosie Vela's nightclub singing is as bad as it could be. However, the worst part is that this mess of a movie is nothing more than a few explosions strung together by some of the most boring scenes ever put on film. Such thrilling events as what pizza to order, discussing Madsen's interior decorating, and other trivial nonsense, makes "Inside Edge" hands down a movie that goes absolutely nowhere. Avoid. - MERK

  • A under-the-radar DTV "neo-noir".

Richard Montana (Madsen) is a California detective who always gets himself into big trouble when he goes deep into dangerous situations. When he gets mixed up with Mario Gio (Lynch), an extremely wealthy drug trafficker, and his lady Lisa (Vela), he gets way more trouble than he bargained for. Gio wants Montana to use his police authority to arrest all his competitors. Montana and Lisa begin hatching a plan of their own. Montana's partner Nealy (Peck) doesn't like any of this one bit, and Montana's rival on the force, Henderson (Richmond) has his suspicions. With no one to trust, what will Montana do? Michael Madsen really turns on the charm this time as the cooler-than-cool Montana. He always has some snappy quips at the ready. His whole look is reminiscent of Billy Joel, and his attitude is beyond laid back. He might be the coolest man ever. Even when he's a cop on the edge, he's still cool. He still has to face up to his classic yelling Captain, Reeves (D. Paul Thomas), but he does it with, well...coolness. Madsen's acting style is oddly naturalistic and he doesn't even seem like he's acting. Maybe that's why he has fans and they seek out his movies, as we do. Rosie Vela as the singer in Gio's club (she actually sang backup for ELO for a time), and female lead will remind you of Kim Basinger. It's great to see Branscombe Richmond on board, especially as a friend/enemy of Michael Madsen. Let's not forget David Fralick as one of Gio's goons - he was in fellow Madsen vehicle Executive Target (1997) as well as crud like Deadly Reckoning (1998). Inside Edge has good music and was going for some Film Noir-ish elements, and for the 90's, we can compare it to Genuine Risk (1990). Interestingly, even though this film has Madsen, Lynch, and Richmond, among others, and got a U.S. (and international) release, it seems Inside Edge is not widely seen. Even fans of the above names don't really know about this movie. Maybe that can change. And while the pace of the movie is a bit slow, especially before the climax, at least it's only 80 minutes (despite what some sources say). For an under-the-radar DTV "neo-noir", Inside Edge really fits the bill. For more action insanity, please visit: www.comeuppancereviews.com

  • a triumph for Richmond

This is a great film featuring a great actor (Branscombe Richmond) and some great cameo's from Bill Cosby and Tony Peck (the bloke who did the voices for scooby doo) The film opens to a huge explosion as a gang of hi-tech criminals storm a bank and make off with the money. Henderson (Richmond) then double crosses his gang who hunt him for the rest of the film. The action is non stop and the scene were Richmond realises that the man who killed his wife was a one armed man is spine tingling. Bill Cosby is tremendous as Chavez the Mexican and the show down between the two is one of the highlights of cinematic history. This is a great film and everyone should see it.
