Harmony (2018) Reviews
A mysterious film with glimmers of magic.
Despite this being a low budget Australian film, I've got to say I really enjoyed it. For me, it had the urban menace of a Romper Stomper intertwined with the mystery of a Twilight. Okay, not as good, but a worthy effort and in that same vein. Perhaps it was Jacqueline Mackenzie's presence (having starred all those years back in Romper Stomper) that made me feel that way, or the standout performances by a few of the other cast members, especially the lead Jessica Falkholt, who tragically passed away months before the theatrical release. What a crying shame! The film carries its darkness well, with ample glimmers of Hope and Light to transcend its overall darker shell. The mystic force in Harmony was well disguised and had me guessing. It made enough sense to me without giving it up so easily, and the overall tempo seemed nicely paced. I didn't get bored at any point and forgot I was in a movie theatre. My personal true test of a good film. You have to remember this is predominantly a young cast coupled to a low production budget, yet the effort transcends the sum of the parts. The major critics will no doubt smash it, because it's low budget with mostly unknown talent, but I would not be so harsh. The nightclub scene - where the two main actors truly shone bright - was a standout. Well done on that scene. I thought of Muriel's Wedding during that scene, such was its warmth and energy. This was a decent home grown attempt at a Twilight, and I hope to see more dollars poured into any sequels. Perhaps the start of something good here ????????
So intriguing!
Really liked this film. Found the lead characters really engaged and totally bought into their stories. Really intriguing and didn't unfold the way I thought it would. And some of the cinematography is amazing, all the scenes where the gang hides out. It looks like it's part of a series, so looking forward to the next installments!
The right balance of Action and Romance
Great chemistry between the two lead actors in this film, which is captivating with a modern twist on the fantasy/love story genre!
Immersive and mysterious
Although a low budget Aussie movie, I think the filmmakers done a great job of bringing an interesting story to life. The young cast have also done an amazing job and I enjoyed watching the relationships unfold between the different characters, particularly Harmony and Mason. Jessica Falkholt, who was tragically killed in a car accident earlier this year portrays the central character Harmony really well. The film is darkness and light at the same time, and the story unfolds nicely, with a few great effects (washing away the pain). I wasn't necessarily expecting to enjoy this film, as I'm not into the Twilight franchise, and this felt like it would be similar. I thought overall, it was more a interesting than other supernatural movies, with an empath as the central character. The only point I would make is that it felt like it was a little too long at the start, I felt myself wanting to get to know the characters sooner. Would recommend!
Captivating viewing
This film was constantly engaging, nicely paced and well written. the hints of light and hope in the sense of darkness were smart and brilliantly acted.
