Cosplayer Nation (2014) Reviews

  • A perfect documentary about Cosplay

    cassielp2015-03-26

Cosplayer Nation is a well made documentary movie about Cosplay, covering it's origins and transitions through time. It's extremely well made & directed, featuring tons of industry people, many well known among them, and covering a wide range of topics and aspects of cosplay, as well as many cosplayers, conventions etc. The passion that went into creating this movie is obvious and everyone even remotely interested in Cosplay should watch it. Even seasoned people might learn something new by watching it. I did. The other basic aspect of the film is that everything is presented in such an approachable way, even newcomers won't feel alienated.

  • Thoughtful insight into the world of cosplay

    amandahatesspam2015-03-25

The documentarians who put this film together have earned my respect! They are clearly passionate about cosplay and the cosplay community - but rather than simply recording pretty images of the goings-on at a few conventions, they took the time to research the origins of cosplay and give the viewers valuable insight into the social dynamics of the community. Although the film focuses at first on anime (a subset of the cosplay community I have little interest in), they do go on to cover how the art has expanded into film and comic books. This was extremely interesting to watch, very informative, and I was left eager for their next installment! Being a newcomer to the cosplay world myself, I have, in appreciation for their hard work, subscribed to their facebook feeds, etc.

  • Inspiring!!

"Cosplayer Nation" speaks a lot of truth, and has inspiration to its viewers. Watching it, it makes me feel a whole lot better about the ideals and views of Cosplay. Admittedly, I had assumptions about what it is to be a cosplayer. For example, I thought I had to be as accurate as I have to be for a certain character. To an extent, yes, but one can still add or modify a character to one's liking, like a fusion of sorts. Also, the community is like a common ground among people... some do go far and beyond to create something fantastic, or some just buy the costume to Cosplay without the stress. Not all need to have the skills to create something, and that's perfectly fine! Cosplay is open world, and no one needs to be shy about how to become a character. Therefore, one doesn't always have to try as hard as some cosplayers, like Yaya Han, Ivy Doomkitty, or Jessica Nigri and among others (who all, by the way, inspire me greatly, but I'll nevertheless exclude anyone for that matter! I welcome all!). Just have fun as you like it! I enjoy cosplay for it's love of creativity and bountiful of fun it gives. Sewing is a natural and favorite hobby, and I like making clothes for all (either "just because" or "by request"). So why not, adding the Cosplay factor made sewing even more enjoyable! The documentary is a compilation of stories shared by people who love the art of Cosplay and I truly enjoyed this storybook. I do look forward to more!!!

  • Love the Cosplay Nation Documentary

For someone who just got into this a year ago, it was interesting and informative to see where it all began. I am starting to come into my own in the cosplay world, and it is wonderful to use as a creative outlet. Everyday is a learning experience, and there is plenty that I have yet to learn. This documentary has taught me about a lot of the different aspects of the cosplay world that I have not yet experienced. In this documentary, you could see that they had a clear vision and were able to touch upon a lot of subjects dealing with the world of cosplay. It is an honest assessment of the community and how it is perceived by others. It shows the good and the bad side of cosplaying, but it makes me appreciate the craft even more. If you haven't seen this documentary, I highly recommend it.

  • A great cosplay explanation and review

    waswayze2015-02-27

Cosplay Nation explores past and current trends in cosplay, its development, and a bit of inside into its future growth and development by exploring the origin, actual cosplayers, and the convention and competition scene. It's a great docu for anyone who cosplays, have ever wanted to cosplay, or even those outside of that realm to lend them understanding as to what we do. While many cosplayers don't know the orgin, it is explained. And for those who don't cosplay, the entirety of the projects, work, mood, and culture is shown by the study of and conversations with those who do cosplay. This really should be a piece for anyone to considering seeing, as it have immense knowledge and lots of dedication to showing who we are and what we do as a whole.
