HAVE SOME CAKE WITH ME
Othell (Charles S. Dutton) is a recovering alcoholic who is attempting to get his life back, making up with his family and getting his job back. He finds more support from friends than family. Othell is not the kind of drunk who beat his wife or molested his daughter, but the kind that missed his dad's funeral...okay he did punch a stranger in a bar. Yet, for some reason his crimes are unforgivable and overly damaging which I found hard to fathom. Established actress Tatyana Ali played Nima the daughter in a poorly scripted part which she had difficulty in making believable. The entire film had a made for TV feel, from the cliche plot down to the soundtrack. Guide: No f-bombs, sex, or nudity.
Surprisingly Good
I say surprisingly good but with actors/actresses like Charles S. Dutton and Loretta Devine what could you expect. A story of broken relationships, miscommunication, fear, struggles that turn into new beginnings. I can't say things always turn out this way but this movie gives us an opportunity to see what forgiveness, truth, and the power of love look like. The best part that I loved was when the mother finally revealed the truth, although In this movie you are not made aware that there is some truth to be revealed. We understood that Tatiyana Ali was angry because her father simply left but why did he stay away? It seemed the mother and her father remained amicable and not at each others throats...they did like many people went their own separate ways. Ali's mother didn't appear to be bitter, especially when she got with Dr. Gyno! That part just through me off a little but what good story doesn't. My favorite part was the wedding dance scene...it was beautiful to the point of tears. Great job.
