Black Widower (2006) Reviews

  • Not real

I went to high school with Ed Amos. I worked at the same General Motors plant as Ed. I knew all three wives. This movie only scrapes the surface of the lives of the people involved. As was said before in another comment: no body in Anderson was interviewed, Ed did not run for Mayor, he had filed in the primary and then Saundra was found dead and he withdrew. Why did the movie leave out his college love interest died falling from a balcony, his parents house mysteriously burnt to the ground after being for sale after he inherited it. His sister's husband had a mysterious stroke while jogging and Ed studied Pharmacy in College. I wish someone would really investigate all the things surrounding Ed and then write a book. What a mystery!!!!!!!!!

  • A very untrue story about real people

    freekeffect2006-04-06

As a person closer to this story than I care to divulge, I can say that this movie is hardly a true story. Ed Amos did kill 4 people (at least) and is serving a life sentence. However, the movie itself makes a mockery of the real people involved and it makes me sick to my stomach that the producers of this movie would claim it to be based on a true story. Not because it is not "based" on a true story, but because by labeling it as such, every single person who watches this movie and does not have access to the real story will assume every moment of it to have actually taken place. The reality is that it is a nearly entirely fictional film that uses the names of actual people. Not a single interview was conducted before production . That said, I do not know what else I could have expected from the Lifetime network. Families of the deceased deserved better.

Sexy David Lipper portrays Ed Amos, a very wealthy, womanizing auto executive who's most recent wife dies at a very young age. When an attorney, Nancy (Kelly McGillis), decides to take a closer look into the woman's death, she eventually uncovers that other women married to Ed died very young also. Coincidence? Nancy does not think so and she goes to great lengths to gather evidence, in spite of legal jurisdiction barriers. Lipper looks great and has the misogynist psycho character down pat. He played a similar role in She Fought Alone, also directed by Christopher Leitch. McGillis is believable in her role. My only criticism of the movie is it seems to focus more on Nancy's relentless pursuit to bust Ed, instead of revealing why Ed was so psychotic from the get-go. The movie hints at sexual boredom as a possible motive for the killings, but by the conclusion of the film I did not see a clear motive (other than Ed's psychosis). Based on a true story, this is an excellent TV movie on the whole. Premiered on Lifetime this week.

  • Black Widower **1/2 When The Obvious isn't that Bad

Ed Amos is a good looking guy. He is a GM executive. He has money and is very popular. He is even the Republican candidate for mayor in a small Indiana town. Trouble is that Amos' 3 wives all died suddenly under very mysterious circumstances as well as his mother. Isn't it obvious that something is terribly wrong? Ed is such a charmer that he has literally been able to get away with murder for all these years. His latest mother-in-law complains that something is wrong. Later on, we find out that she has been meeting him secretly and knew him before he married her daughter. What's going on here? By the way, did he drop out of the mayor's race when wife #2 died? (She was also a closet Democrat who privately joked that she'd vote for the opposition.) A prosecutor arrives on the scene who decides to take the bull by the horns and go for murder 1. At one point, the prosecutor announces that her husband died of heart disease. Ironically, he was a cardiologist! I began to wonder about her. Nevertheless, she uncovers the way that Ed did away with wife #3 and most likely the other ladies as well. Pretty intriguing. This is a true story and Ed is serving a life sentence. He was never brought to trial in the other 3 deaths.

  • A Movie About A Local Man Accused Of Murdering His Wife

Spoiler #1: My only complaint, was that the exterior shots were not filmed here, in Anderson, Indiana, so it kind of spoils parts of the film for us local residents. Spoiler #2: When Mr. Amos allegedly killed his 3rd wife in Detroit, MI, he was 53-years old. Mr. Lipper looks like he's under 30, while Mr. Amos pretty much looked his age. You know, dark-haired, graying at the temples, well-tanned. Being a life-long resident of this town, I am acquainted with some of the participants of this case, but not all of them. We do have over 53,000 residents, so it's kind of hard to know everyone. Regardless, the case, as portrayed in the Lifetime movie, was pretty accurate in most aspects. Mr. Lipper's portrayal of Mr. Amos was very good, although he was way too young--(see spoiler #2 above). Still the film is not bad if it's type. As of this writing, the local police and prosecutors still haven't re-opened the cases involving Mr. Amos' first two wives, nor of the death of his mother. Too bad. My mother and grandmother used to shop at Mrs. Toles' (Mr. Amos' mother) flower shop. Anyway, it's a pretty good film. The only reasons I rated it a 5/10 was because of the spoilers. To non-residents, these spoilers shouldn't matter, so, if you enjoy this genre, watch it and enjoy. I recommend it.
