Six novice riders-father, sons and friends-take on the Colorado backcountry on BMW F800GS adventure bikes to create a film about life, meaning and the longing to be part of something epic that is written on every human heart. John Eldredge, author of the New York Times best-seller Wild at Heart (4 million copies sold) and his three sons are joined by two friends for a thousand-mile ride through the best dual-sport tracks the Centennial State has to offer, serving up a thoughtful documentary on life's deepest questions. "Everyone is looking for a story worth living," is the line that opens the film-an adventure narrative that captures the highs and lows of dual-sport riding, including a bone breaking crash on Engineer Pass. "We set out to tell a story about story," Eldredge explains. "Too many adventure films are high on great footage but desolate when it comes to content and meaning. You can only watch so many Red Bull adrenaline shots till you want something meatier-a film that talks...

A Story Worth Living (2016) Reviews

  • Spoiler, its not about the bikes. Or much of anything. A Story Not Worth Watching

    bryanspiegel2016-05-20

We just got back from the one time showing of "A Story Worth Living", which presented itself in all of the advertising, as an on / off road, dual sport adventure on bikes. The bikes, however were only flavor. The tale, as it were, was about the word "story". Or something. Lemme sum this up. -Quirky intro -Short bios on a bunch of hipsters -"We like long way round -lets buy bikes!" -short prep, set off... -talk about expectation about the ride -30 min later meet some guy, talk about an airplane -meet some other guy, horses. Jesus. -little bit of riding more more talking about riding (couldn't be more stereotypical of BMW GS riders if they filmed it at a Starbucks) -more talk about adventure -talk about love -talk about fear.. child molestation? What? -Hey, some actual riding! A crash! Cool, obstacles! -End of ride, talk about the ride -Read CS Lewis -Charlie! -Pat'selves on back (This is where we left, got ice-cream, met up with a couple of local forum members we rode with before) All said, this was a short commercial for Twisted Throttle and Arai, then a 50 minute trailer for 5 minutes of motorcycle content, with who knows how long of a review afterward by the cast. If I hear the word story one more f'kn time......I wanted to like it. I wanted it to be good. I like those companies sponsoring these sorts of projects. But this was barely ready for Youtube, let alone a theater release.

  • Beautiful cinematography marred by men talking about their feelings

    darth-saint2016-05-20

Don't get me wrong, it's 2016 and we've come to understand that men also have feelings and don't always need to be portrayed by stoic men of few words, such as Barry Newman in Vanishing Point, or more recently, Ryan Gosling in Drive, but it's possible to take this too far. This movie, billed as a motorcycle adventure movie, started derailing right from the start and went off the deep end when a farmer started talking about abuse and molestation he endured as a child. Not that this isn't a topic worthy of discussion, but it wasn't what I came for. I was expecting some manufactured drama and suspense - just looking at the guys in the film you know these aren't red-bull athletes, and no one was going to be performing stunts that might actually kill them. That was part of the appeal - guys doing things that my friends and I could do. Sadly there was very little of anyone doing anything. Instead for most of the movie, the men are hanging around and talking. The more they talked the more it became clear that this was a movie about finding religion and God, and not about motorcycles. Finding God on the road. Finding God in horses. Finding God on the river. You get the point. Once done talking, they would then talk about how good the talking felt. The very poorly scripted talking was occasionally interrupted by absolutely beautiful footage of motorcycling across dirt roads and passes of Colorado, which was the only saving grace of this movie. But then they would go right back to talking which would then be over-analyzed by the group's psychologist rider. At the end of the movie, the movie didn't end. Instead credits rolling, we cut to the guys sitting on stools talking about the movie. This was around the time my group decided to walk out, so I can't actually tell you how or when the movie ends, but I encourage you not to find out. Instead just re-watch the Long Way Round.

  • Beautiful Photography Interrupted by Men Crying About Their Fathers

    winpatterson2016-05-20

First rule of storytelling: stop telling us that you're telling a story and start telling a damn story. Second rule of storytelling: tell a story and make sure it's worth telling. A half hour into this movie, we find the principals sitting around in a circle, one of them crying about missing his father. Too much, too soon. We don't know whether we even like these people yet, have been given absolutely no time to understand who they are, their personalities, and what their relationships are to each other. Nothing built. It's also a little hard to watch, as a middle-aged man who rides motorcycles. These kids somehow managed to buy tens of thousands of dollars worth of motorcycles and gear, but most of them didn't have any experience or apprenticeship to learn how to use them properly. They took a weekend course on off-road riding and then made a movie about riding around the backcountry in Colorado. . . Except we don't really get to know where they are, or where they are going, or how long they'll be gone. This wasn't a journey. It wasn't a trip. It was a bunch of rich kids with their dads and friends and toys, riding around Colorado, blathering on about "story". But that's not to say that it couldn't have been a good movie. It's hard to screw up a film featuring sweeping aerial views of the Rocky Mountains. Truly, there's some gorgeous photography. If it makes it to DVD, maybe I'll just turn the sound off.

  • A Jesus Freak Movie That Even Jesus Hates

    curtisrschmitt2016-05-21

Comparisons were made by the filmmakers between their project and The Long Way Round w/ Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman. The only similarity between them is that all riders involved were on BMWs. The similarities end there. Avoid this movie at all costs. It is not an adventure motorcycle movie. It's just two hours of silly woohoo Jesus propaganda during which the word "story" must have been uttered 100+ times. The movie is so terrible that just one day after its release the producers are offering everyone who hates it their money back. That is the only justice, that they're not going to make a dime on this piece of crap. They've wasted their time and ours. Sponsors have already started distancing themselves from this movie, and I wouldn't be surprised if the rest follow suit. A Story Worth Living is A Movie Worth Avoiding.

  • Motorcycles+Colorado scenery. What could go wrong?

    wbrown622016-05-19

Been looking forward to "A Story Worth Living" ever since previews popped up on the internet. Seeing and enjoying the two "Long Way" mini-series I hoped that this would be the American equivalent. Well, the scenery, what you see of it is incredible. The riding, what you see of it, is pretty good. The problem...and you already know what I'm going to say...is that there is not nearly enough riding and scenery. There is instead of exciting riding and beautiful Colorado scenery, the less than beautiful and terribly unexciting experience of men talking and sharing their "story." No, this isn't a motorcycle movie or a story about the beauty of the western US. It's cliché filled tripe wrapped up in the shiny wrapping of motorcycles and mountains. There is likely hundreds of hours of good stuff not in the movie. After the end of the main movie there is a little talk show (not kidding )where they do promise to release more footage. I can only hope it will be a lot more of the good stuff and less of the TMI stuff.
