  This film was positively wonderful. I am dumbstruck at it's IMDB rating. For crying out loud it's a magical children's tale with a soundtrack that includes Brian Eno/Robert Fripp and 70s soul jams. It's disability-positive, the way the sound is done to convey deaf children navigating NYC is extremely creative and well done. The art and scenes are what I worshipped as a child - my greatest fantasy was to find a secret room in a museum and stay the night! And the dioramas and the incredible way they wove them into the storytelling! The people saying "nothing dramatic happens" are seriously off their rockers - a kid loses his hearing!!! two deaf children run away to NYC!!! how on Earth is that not dramatic? This film made me cry and laugh and feel like a child again. It's beautiful. If you have a child, watch it with them. If you don't, like me, watch it and feel like a kid again.

  I absolutely love this movie. David Ehrlich wrote:"This is a soul-stirring and fiercely uncynical film that suggests the entire world is a living museum for the people we've lost, and that we should all hope to leave some of ourselves behind in its infinite cabinet of wonders". I couldn't have said it better myself. Of course it is a bit slow and maybe too complicated for a kid (it's definitely not for everyone). But A LOT of people actually love The Greatest Showman or another rubbish...I am 25 years old - I watched it with my mother who is 60 years old and we enjoed it. The ending is quite outstanding in my opinion. Everyone involved did such a beautiful job.

• Very beautiful film

  I'm a great fan of Todd Haynes' work and I'm so happy for him. Third time at Cannes with such a beautifful, bizzare and unic movie. How to come to terms with the world when there is so much pain? How to find a meaning in death of your parents? or in their absence? How to see your injured memory as a museum of wonders? Millicent Simmonds is amazing and such a beautiful and sad cameo of Michelle Williams.

  I'm very sad to see all the dislike reviews to this Todd Haynes film. Since he made Safe also with Julianne Moore. It was both there first films together. You'll like this film. I'm not going to give any of it away. I just want to save it from all the bad reviews I see here. It's a 2 hour Todd Haynes film. You have to stick with it even for me it was hard but sometimes with a film you have to go with it. And like the other films I see him do. There always beautiful and the tears for this one was hard to hold back. It all makes sense in the end. And it's a interesting story. The 1970's songs he picked were great. Anyway Todd great job on this. I didn't even know about it. Till today.

• I really, really wanted to like this more than I did.

  This film has two things going for it that meant I should have loved it. It was written Brian Selznick...the same person who wrote the wonderful "Hugo"...a terrific film that inexplicably lost a ton of money. And, it features two main characters who are deaf...and since I use sign language and have a deaf daughter, I really wanted to love it. But, sadly, the story had so many ridiculous plot elements and relied too often on magical resolutions, it lost me. The film is about two people whose lives you see in their childhood. One is a deaf girl in 1927 who goes to New York City to try to find her very famous mother who abandoned her. The other is a 12 year- old who is struck by lightning and becomes deaf. He, inexplicably, finds a book and receipt and is suddenly convinced that he has to run away from Minnesota and make his way to New York City...something that never made an ounce of sense. How he KNEW his destiny was in New York, I have no idea and based on the flimsy evidence I could only assume the child was insane. Yet, like a movie, when he goes to New York things inexplicably work out AND he has a happy ending...and meets the girl from 1927. Had the film involved magic fairies or the like, it might have worked for me. But to assume all the plot elements somehow are leading the boy to his destiny in New York is preposterous. So, we end up having a very weak story with some decent performances. By the way, the only deaf actor in the film does NOT sign. And, the signing of the ones who do is only fair in quality (particularly the brother). The things you know because you sign!
