Git (2004) Reviews
Subtle, quiet, superb film-making
Git is a very quiet, subtle film, superbly made and very well acted. The simple premise of the story is one of film-maker struggling with writers-block who goes on a last-minute trip to fulfill an almost forgotten promise. The film explores love, loss, memory and the resolution of emotions. This a great little film for anyone who has ever held onto the emotional memories of a relationship for longer than they should have. Beautifully shot on the picturesque Udo Island, and subtly directed by Song Il-Gon, this film has all the traits we have come to expect from the Korean Film Industry - great production values, honest and realistic performances, and an interesting perspective on it's subject matter.
One of the rare feel good movies.
Just came home after seeing this movie at the night film festival in Copenhagen, and I must say I'm pleasantly surprised. Git is a slow paced movie with gorgeous visuals and little talk, this is nothing new from South Corean movies. (Kim Ki-duk does this as well and with much brilliance, though his movies mostly differ from this by being harsh as hell.) Unlike most other good Corean movies or rather movies in general, this movie is both naive, has a feel good vibe and is good... This reviewer can only think of a handful really good movies with these elements. Anyways if you have good patience, enjoys flicks that slowly grows om you, and don't mind that a few elements are heavily inspired by Kim Ki-duk and my sassy girl then this will be a good choice.
Your Butt is Lopsided
After finished what he terms a mediocre movie, the film director Jang Hyeong-seong decides to go on a short vacation to Udo Island. However, the location was not chosen randomly. Ten years earlier Hyeong-seong and his girlfriend visited the island and made an agreement that they would meet at the same inn in ten years. However, after Hyeong-seong's girlfriend studies abroad in Poland, she breaks up their relationship and eventually marries a German conductor. While not completely distraught, Hyeong-seong obviously still possesses feelings for his ex. After arriving at the island, Hyeong-seong is picked up by a young girl on a Moped. Very cheerful, the ever-smiling So-yeon seems to be the only bright spot at the otherwise lonely inn. The only other occupant is her uncle who has not said a word after his wife left him. In the lonely, but lovely environs of Udo Island, Hyeong-seong awaits to see his ex-girlfriend. However, when the time comes for his ex to arrive, a piano is shipped to the inn. Filmed on a shoestring budget, Feather is a lovely film. The natural environs of Udo Island and the genial relationship between Hyeong-seong and So-yeon, 12 years Hyeong-seong's junior, make Feather to be a gentle heartwarming film without becoming overly sappy. Originally intended to be one of three short films, Feather took on a life of its own and became quite a gem.
absolute gem of a movie
I discovered this little gem a few months ago and since then I've watched it like 5 times. There is something about this movie that brings the old romantic in everyone. Iam also astounded at how beautiful this film looked despite its low budget. The filmatography of the island is gorgeous to say the least and catches all the moods of the island from brigth sunny to dark stormy weather. I won't go into much details but the last scene where the main antagonist leaves on the boat and the girl chases him to the pier is one of the most powerful romantic scenes ever! There is a gorgeous violin/piano score that brings tears to my eyes.
melodramatic tale with poor acting and beautiful scenery
I didn't have possibility to see short version of the film, but seems to me that short version was correct format for this film. Prolongation of this film filled it with unnecessary and irrational plot twists. Along with that goes poor acting and sometimes ridiculous dialog. In spite of that film has quite beautiful scenery with some memorable images, but bad editing and not insufficient care about details, which are very important when movie takes slow pace (take for example Kim Ki-Duky), diminish film value. After seeing it I left with a feeling that I lost chance of seeing something special. Who knows, Mab director of this film, felt the same after finishing it? As it is said in the beginning of the film by main protagonist: "I just finished mediocre film". 100 percent true. in film we see young filmmaker who returns to place, where he last time met with his first love, who is already gone. In these days young lovers made promise - if they separate, they will meet again after 10 years the same day in the same place.
