As Night Falls (2010) Reviews
As Night Falls: The rating doesn't lie
As Night Falls currently sits with a 2.7 rating on IMDB and that's incredibly low, it generally takes a special kind of movie to acquire that. It tells the rather cliched tale of a bunch of 20 somethings getting picked off one by one by a malevolent force. Advertised as a comedy horror I can confidently say it is lacking on the comedy, in fact it outwardly only has one single moment that felt out of place in a horror movie. It looks okay, the cast are passable so what went wrong? The story is generic is hell, it's pace is dreadful and makes for some really hard viewing. Then ontop of that the sound editing is some of the worst I've ever heard. The volume not only randomly dips but goes altogether mute for several seconds at a time. How does something like this get released? How did the creators not notice? I'd say it had potential but I'd be lying. It's as generic as they come. The Good: Most aspects are competent enough The Bad: Some awful editing both video and audio Inconsistent tones Dumb finale Things I Learnt From This Movie: They never explained why the girl had a giant gob stopped in her eyesocket!
What A Mess
I couldn't tell whether I was supposed to take this flick seriously. In the end, I've decided not to. Debbie Rochon barely has a line and that's for the best because the screenplay is ridiculous. There's no plot. People do ridiculous things with alarming regularity. The zombie monsters get in fist fights. People get stabbed and recover moments later. There's not much to recommend As Night Falls. Your life is better without it.
DO YOU HAVE SUPER POWERS?
Elizabeth (Deneen Melody) and Holly (Lily Cardone) live in house that has an annual curse with a pair of resurrected slashers. Rather than be chased around like they do in the movies, they fight back. I bought the DVD because of the picture on the DVD cover, a young lady with a bloody face and sword. Yes, that scene was in the film. The writing of the script attempt to introduce a number of comedic elements, unfortunately they didn't all click to make this a camp classic. The outdoor sound was choppy in one scene. The film just tries too hard to cute and clever. Guide: No sex or nudity. Deneen Melody is a bath tease. Heard one word that could have been an F-bomb.
Better than a lot of dreck I've subjected my eyes to
I found this movie oddly charming. No, it's not the most original or the scariest/funniest or the best production, but I felt there was earnest effort put into making it, which is more than I can say about a lot of godawful horror movies I've seen. There was a sort of genuineness to it that I don't often see but do appreciate. It won't be to everyone's taste, as evidenced by the other reviews and ratings, but I was engaged enough to watch all the way through and honestly root for the protagonists.
You might be asleep well before night falls...
I was lured by the movie's cover/poster and the fact that it was a horror movie. Admittably, I didn't know anything about the movie or who starred in it prior to finding it. But my love for the horror genre made me pick up "As Night Falls" and give it a chance... ...a chance that I should have skipped on. "As Night Falls" turned out to be a rather boring and mundane horror movie at best. It failed to really entertain me, and it didn't bring anything new to the horror genre. It felt like it trotted through its storyline blindfolded. And speaking of the storyline, then it was not really any type of interesting. And I often found my attention to the movie drifting away to my phone for example. I did, however, decide to stay with the movie right to the very end, If there has just been something to justify this as being a horror movie, it would have been so much better, an improvement for sure. But there wasn't, and it made it feel prolonged to sit through an hour and twenty minutes waiting for something scary to happen. The acting in "As Night Falls" was as to be expected from a movie such as this, for better or worse. I will say that I am sure that people actually were putting on their best performances. If you enjoy a good comedy, then you should definitely find something with a lot more kick and bite to it than "As Night Falls". Providing that you actually make it through the first time you watch "As Night Falls", I doubt that you will be returning for a second viewing. My rating of this movie is a mere 3 out of 10 stars.
