Angel of Reckoning (2016) Reviews
One of Those Movies that the Viewer Regrets Watching
When the lesbian military Rachel Baldwin (Jessica Kabasinski) returns home, she is welcomed by her niece Jamie (Khila Freeman) that introduces her boyfriend Ryan (Hunter Wieczorek) to her. During the night, Jamie and Ryan have sex and he proposes to film their intercourse. Then Rick meets his dealer to buy cocaine, but he does not have money and offers the footage instead. The film is sold to a porn site and Jamie commits suicide. Now Rachel uses the alias Angel to revenge her beloved niece. "Angel of Reckoning" is one of those low-budget movies that the viewer regrets watching. The curious title and the horror genre indicated in IMDb may make the user disregard the 3.2 rating expecting to see a decent movie. However the story of revenge (not horror), screenplay and the direction are terrible and everything is low quality and painful to watch: performances, fight choreography, cinematography, location, edition, dialogues. Why is necessary to show Rachel as lesbian? Jessica Kabasinski is not beautiful woman but at least is hot in her costumes.. If you see this film without pressing the fast- forward button, you may be considered a hero. My vote is three. Title (Brazil): Not Available
Revenge Done Cheap
A military woman returns home after a terrible ordeal only to have her niece commit suicide. She later learns it was because her coked out boyfriend sold their personal sex tape to a website and people from school seen it. The aunt gets a job as a stripper and buys an Uzi all in the name of revenge. This film had potential but it was hard to get past the stale acting. You sort of forget about reality and watch her neat and tidy revenge. Most of the violence are bullets to the head and knees. The film is watchable and laughable as well but I would save watching this one unless you had absolutely nothing else to watch.
Lost Opportunity...
I have no real issue with low budget. In fact, given a great script and one room as a set with good direction and editing you can make a good film for under a thousand. Sadly, this film had none of those things and I was being generous giving it a rating of 2. Now, I rarely blame the actors as a bad director can easily manage to make the greats come across as talentless. The editing deserves special mention as they hadn't even bothered to cut sound correctly with some dialogue spoken at a distance from the microphone being used in closeup. Sadly, you really need to give this one a miss. Bad editing, a terrible script and brutal direction leaves nothing worthwhile in its wake.
Hardhitting revenge opus
Tough and resourceful war veteran Rachel Baldwin (a solid and sympathetic performance by the beautiful Jessica Kabasinski) exacts a ferocious revenge on the assorted scumbag criminals who are in one way or another responsible for the death of her beloved niece Jamie (sweetly played by Khila Freeman). This film marks a radical departure from writer/director Len Kabasinski's previous more down'n'dirty exploitation fare: It's a lot more gritty and serious in tone, with nice use of seedy practical locations, startling moments of brutal violence, and a colorful array of truly slimy and hateful villains. Moreover, the deliberate pacing, shell-shocked war veteran heroine, and firm grounding of the gripping premise in a believably sordid everyday reality brings to mind the grim 70's grindhouse gem "Rolling Thunder" while the absence of nudity shows considerable growth and maturity on Kabasinski's part as a filmmaker. This movie further benefits from sound acting by Frederick Williams as the shrewd Detective Miles Trufont, Donna Hamblin as ruthless crime kingpin Beverly, Jasmin St. Claire as vicious illegal arms dealer Smoothy, Mark Kosebucki as slimy drug pusher James, Jawn Gross as smarmy amateur porn peddler Billy Williams, Kirsten McCain as Jamie's grieving mother Carol, Lisa Neeld as Rachel's loyal lesbian lover Reagan, Tim O'Hearn as scuzzy thug Brick, and Deborah Dutch as worn-out aging stripper Bobbi. The sharp cinematography offers plenty of neat fades and dissolves. A real on the money little flick.
Indie vigilante thriller shot in Pennsylvania
ANGEL OF RECKONING is one of those ultra-cheap indie thrillers, this time shot on the streets of Pennysylvania. It's about a maladjusted young woman, grieving for the sudden loss of a family member, who decides to go gunning for revenge against those she holds responsible. The rest of the cast is populated by the usual scummy characters including pornographers and drug dealers and various criminal types. There are more resources here than in some indie films, with plenty of scene changes for example, and some titillation, but the usual problems involving bad acting and a general lack of suspense and cohesion.
