A Pink Christmas (1978) Reviews

  • Great Christmas cartoon

Heart-warming tale starring the Pink Panther and set in New York around the turn of the century. The cool feline is only looking for a bite to eat but finds trouble every way he turns. A chance discovery of a Santa suit leads to a job in department store as St Nick, but when he takes a bite out of a little girl's lollipop he is chased by her irate mother and the department store manager. Attempts to get jailed and thereby qualify for a Christmas dinner are unsuccessful but after giving away half of a hard-earned doughnut to an even hungrier little dog, he is rewarded for his kind deed in an unexpected way. Adapted from O Henry's famous short story 'The Cop And The Anthem'.

  • Pink Poverty

The Pink Panther is alone, cold, and destitute (I guess MGM kept all the profits to his movies then). While wandering the streets of an early 20th century city he devises multiple ways of scrounging himself an Xmas dinner, such as infiltrating a department store and trying to pass himself off as a prisoner (even THEY get a free dinner). Needless to say, all of them fail, leaving Pinky miserable and desperate. At his lowest moment he shares a discarded donut with a dog, only for an Xmas miracle to happen. It's a very sweet cartoon, but doesn't rate too highly on my list of animated specials. The music consists of mainly the Pink Panther tune fused with a jazz version of 'Jingle Bells'. It gets a bit annoying. Some obscure carols are in there too.

  • I adored this

I watched "The Pink Panther" when I was young, but had almost forgotten about it until my sister lent me her DVD of this special...and special it was. The entire story was about the homeless Pink Panther (was this made before or after he was an Olympic skier?) wanting just to eat and getting thwarted along the way. It's a sad story and I very much "felt" for the Pink Panther along the way (an old woman compassionate enough to feed birds couldn't recognize that the Panther was hungry? The man angry about the snow on his steps couldn't have hired The Pink Panther to shovel his steps?)there were many wonderful moments of (well done) slapstick humor that kept the story from becoming depressing. The ending was wonderful and even the singing children didn't completely distract. Wonderfully moving, "A Pink Christmas" sends an unexpectedly powerful message about hunger and poverty and the lengths somebody will go to to provide for himself. It more than exceeded my expectations and I will make a point to watch it every Christmas.

  • Great Christmas movie!

    Movie Nuttball2005-07-03

I thought that the Pink Panther and other characters were really funny and all had great personalities. The animation in My opinion was crisp, clean, and really clear. Not to mention beautiful! Most of the characters in this movie are hilarious in My opinion. These characters are the funnies and talented ever seen. In fact, The things that goes on in this series' cartoons are in My opinion nuts which that is what makes them hilarious! There are so many to like and laugh at and the silly things they do! If you like the original the pink Panther cartoons and the original Looney Tunes then I strongly recommend that you watch this movie!

  • Lovely Christmas Pink Panther special

A Pink Christmas may not quite by up to far with the best of the Pink Panther cartoons, or the early ones from 1964 to 1971. On the other hand, it is better than most of the post-1975 cartoons, which were uneven and in no way disgraces the series. There are a great many strengths here. The iconic theme tune is one of animation's finest and most timeless, not ageing or annoying a jolt even after hearing it more times than you can count. The slapstick humour is well-timed and very funny (funnier than most post-1975 Pink Panther cartoons), without interfering with the story too much, and the story while basically a series of instances is incredibly charming and heart-warming as well as genuinely moving. Admittedly I teared up a few times, and the cartoon is sweet but never in a sugary way. As with all the Pink Panther cartoons it is dialogue-less, which only adds to the charm and the Pink Panther have always worked so well without it. Pinky is as ever well-designed and he is very cool and likable, also displaying great comic timing even when not saying a word. The side characters are all relevant to the story and help give the special its humour and poignancy. On the other hand, A Pink Christmas is not without its flaws. The animation quality is uneven, it's bright and colourful, the animators as always do a great job with Pinky's wide variety of facial expressions and some of the backgrounds have more detail than most of those in the post-1975 cartoons, but there is some crude drawing here and some backgrounds are sparse. The early Pink Panther cartoons were always minimal and simple in style but were always elegant in doing so, however the vast majority of the post-1975 cartoons took that simplicity to extremes so it was somewhat simplistic instead(A Pink Christmas doesn't do it quite as badly though). Aside from the theme tune, the music is lacking the wonderful slinkiness and jazzy elegance of the early cartoons, there is evidence of that(more so than most Pink Panther cartoons made around the time of this) but a lot of the music here borders on repetitive and in your face. In summary, a lovely Christmas special with the Pink Panther with the right amount of sweetness, charm, humour, emotion and heart. 8/10 Bethany Cox
